Types of plastic and recycling symbols explained
The plastic recycling symbols are the numbers 1 to 7 inside the triangle of arrows on packaging. Each number identifies a different type of plastic, with different uses and ease of recycling. Knowing them helps you separate correctly and recycle better.
- → The number inside the triangle indicates the type of plastic.
- → PET (1) and HDPE (2) are the most recycled.
- → Identifying the type makes correct separation easier.
The 7 types of plastic
| Symbol | Plastic | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · PET | Polyethylene terephthalate | Water and soft-drink bottles |
| 2 · HDPE | High-density polyethylene | Detergent bottles, strong bags |
| 3 · PVC | Polyvinyl chloride | Pipes, blisters |
| 4 · LDPE | Low-density polyethylene | Bags, plastic film |
| 5 · PP | Polypropylene | Caps, food containers |
| 6 · PS | Polystyrene | Cups, foam trays |
| 7 · Other | Mixes and others | Multilayer packaging |
Which recycle most easily
PET (1) and HDPE (2) are the most recycled and in-demand. LDPE (4), used in bags, is also recycled and is part of the material we use to make our trash bags.
Why identifying them matters
Separating plastic by type improves the quality of recovered material and makes it easier to turn into new products. It is a key step to recycle at home effectively.
Frequently asked questions
What does the number inside the triangle mean?
It identifies the plastic resin type, from 1 to 7. It does not always mean the item is recycled everywhere, but it helps classify it.
Which is the most recyclable plastic?
PET (1) and HDPE (2) are the easiest to recycle and the most in demand by industry.
What plastic are bags made from?
Bags are usually made from polyethylene (HDPE and LDPE). At Ecoplásticos we use recycled material to make them.
